William Stanley West was the son of John William and Ethel Maud West, of Manor Park, Essex, he enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Sergeant West successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway, and also glider training, and was posted to 3 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

L/Sgt West was killed in action on 9 June 1944, aged 21, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
