Major Nick O' Brien enlisted into the Army on 15 September 1962 and trained at the Parachute Regiment & Airborne Forces Depot in Platoon 252.

He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving a Special Regular Commission into the Army Air Corps in 1976.

He retired from the Army in 1984.
