Patrick McCarthy was the son of Eugene and Mary McCarthy and the husband of Josephine McCarthy, of Hanworth. He enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant McCarthy successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to A Company, 11th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt McCarthy was killed in action on 22 September 1944, aged 28, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
