Capt Stuart Mawson volunteered for airborne forces in 1943 and qualified as a military parachutist on Course 96 which ran from 16 to 30 December 1943.He was initially posted to 224 Parachute Field Ambulance RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) before joining The 11th Parachute Battalion as the Regimental Medical Officer.

Capt Mawson jumped under fire into Arnhem during Operation Market Garden on 18 September 1944.

He was taken Prisoner of War as were many of the RAMC who stayed to treat the wounded, he was sent to Salag IVG in Oschatz, Germany.

After the war he continued his medical career and became a leading Ears, Nose & Throat surgeon and Consultant Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London.

When he retired in 1979, he wrote his account Arnhem form notes taken during and shortly after the battle. He published them in the book ‘Arnhem Doctor’.

Stuart Mawson passed away in 2008.
