John Cooper was the son of John and Mary Cooper, of Tiverton, Devon, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Cooper successfully completed parachute training in Kabrit, Egypt and was posted to 156 Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Torch, North Africa.

Cpl Cooper was killed in action on 30 July 1943, aged 22, and was buried in Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia.
