Anthony Cavendish, the adopted nephew of Louisa Daniel of Darwen, Lancashire, enlisted into The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment).He volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 74, which ran at RAF Ringway from 23 July to 3 August 1943. The course report states: ‘Cavendish: Good man: seemed to enjoy the course.'

After initially being posted to the Holding wing at Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield, he then went to C Company, The 5th (Scottish) Parachute Battalion.

Corporal Cavendish served in Italy, the South of France and on Operation Manna in Greece.

He was Killed in Action, aged 21 on 4 January 1945 and is now buried in Phaleron War Cemetery, Greece.
