Stanley Thorne was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Thorne, of Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne.Private Thorne successfully completed his parachute training on 1 July 1944. 

Pte Thorne was posted to the Airborne Forces Holding Unit before being transferred to the The 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion (9th Para Bn). Whilst serving with 9th Para Bn, Private Thorne took part in Operation Varsity.

He was killed on the 17 April 1945 nd is now buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
