Jack Stancombe was a long-serving member of 4 PARA, commanding D Company in Stockton on Tees and Headquarters Company in Pudsey. He was known by his soldiers and platoon commanders for an affable and patient manner. In civil life he was a graphic designer and for many years worked for the Yorkshire Post.
His interests included sailing, rock climbing, photography and in later life he amassed one of the country's largest collections of Victorian pressed glass.
