John Frederick Hand was born on 19 January 1928 in Lowdham, Nottingham.After volunteering for airborne forces, Corporal Hand was posted HQ 6th Airborne Divisional Column RASC. He went on to served in Palestine.

He was killed in a terrorist attack near Haifa. He is now buried in Haifa War Cemetery, Palestine.
