Donald Thomas Payne served as a Guardsman in the mid-1950s.He joined the Grenadier Guards in 1954, before being transferred to No 1 (Guards) Independent Parachute Company in 1955.

During his service with the Guards Parachute Coy until 1957, he served in the deployment to Cyprus, during the EOKA campaign, and later to Suez during Op Musketeer in November 1956.
