Private Vernon Smith, son of George Albert and Harriet Emma Smith, of Carlisle, served with 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment. He took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.Private Smith died 22 September 1944, aged 21 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
