Thomas Piper, son of Thomas and Agnes Piper; husband of Jessie Piper, enlisted in the Border Regiment and volunteered for Airborne forces.Lance Corporal Piper successfully completed Glider training and was posted to C Company 1st (Airborne) Battalion the Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Piper was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 25. He was originally given a field burial near the Valkenburglaan – Utrechtseweg crossroads and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 9 September 1946.
