After volunteering for Airborne Forces, James Brighouse served with Support Company, 2nd Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment. Private Brighouse deployed by glider to capture the Rhine crossings at Arnhem, during Operation Market Garden in 1944 and was taken a Prisoner of War.

He died of Tuberculosis, aged 32 years old, on 4 April 1945 in Stalag VIIIB and is now buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
