James William Orton was the son of James William and Elizabeth Orton; husband of Kathleen Orton, of Keighley, Yorkshire, he enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Driver Orton successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to 398 (Airborne) Composite Company, Royal Army Service Corps and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Dvr Orton was killed in action on 13 June 1944, age 32, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
