John William Crew was born and lived in Bristol. He enlisted in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

Warrant Officer, Class II, Company Sergeant Major Crew successfully completed glider training and was posted to the 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

CSM Crew was killed in action on 19 June 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial in Breville, France. He was reinterred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 3 July 1945.
