Peter Argent Saunders was the husband of Jean Saunders, of Forest Bank, Taynuilt, Argyllshire. He was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Saunders successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Kabrit, Egypt, and was posted to 18 Platoon, D Company, 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in operations in Italy and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Saunders was killed in action by a sniper in Villa Eletta on 21 September 1944, and given a field burial behind a Baker’s shop in Utrechtseweg, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 23 October 1945.
