Peter Hazell was the son of Ralph Carey and Ethel Anna Hazell; husband of Yda Christine Hazell, of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Major Hazell was attached to HQ Airborne Troops and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Maj Hazell was flying in RAF 658 Squadron Air Observation Auster MT-281, base Eindhoven, piloted by Capt. Charles McCorry. Peter Hazell was killed in action, aged 32, when the aircraft crashed at Mariaheide, Veghel. The crew were originally buried in a meadow opposite the house of Mr G Van Boxmeer at Uden and re-interred to Uden War Cemetery on 14 September 1945. (Roll of Honour, 5th Revised Edition, 2011).
