Joined the Royal Navy as a junior Seaman Nov 1958. Trained as a radar operator, but realised I would go nuts watching a strobe go round 8 hours a day and puking in a bucket, so in Oct 1960 managed to transfer to the army and my father's regiment, the Welsh Guards. I had already set my sights on joining the Guards Parachute Company and in 1962 arrived at Pirbright.
