John Francis Bailey was born on 1 December 1925 in Poynton.He enlisted into the Royal Engineers and was then attached to 1 Airborne Squadron in the 6 Airborne Division.

On 4 March 1948, Lieutenant Bailey was killed by a sniper when he was trying to aid a Jewish civilian.

Lt Bailey is buried at Haifa War Cemetery, Palestine.
