Harold Paine was the son of Harry William and Emma Louisa (Russell) Paine of Gosport, Hampshire, he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Paine successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 75 from 26 July to 6 August 1943. His course report stated “An excellent NCO and parachutist. He was posted to 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy Landings).

L/Cpl Paine was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 21, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
