Clifford Carless. Born Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1920. At the outbreak of war he was living and working as a wholesale grocers assistant in Macclesfield.

He volunteered for service with the airborne forces having previously served with The North Staffs Regiment on 24 January 1943.

He died in Tunisia on 4 September 1943, just days before his unit, 151 then renamed 156 Parachute Battalion, was transferred to the Italian theatre. Clifford was killed from  a premature explosion of a captured 37mm Breda anti gun. 3 other men were killed in another similar accident that July. This serious accident led to an immediate order to fit safety pins to all 2 inch mortar bombs.

Clifford is laid to rest at The Enfidaville war Cemetery, Tunisia. Grave 6.C.26

His profile was reproduced from a local newspaper article commemorating the fallen in 1945.
