Private George McCarthy was the son of Robert and Elizabeth McCarthy, of Gateshead, Co Durham, and nephew of Mrs M Meakin, also of Gateshead. He served with 1st Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.He died on 20 September 1944, aged 21 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
