Frederick Ernest Howes, son of Frederick and Amelia Howes, of Thame, Oxfordshire, enlisted into The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.Private Howes successfully completed Glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He took part in the 6th Airborne response to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, during Winter 1944-5.

Pte Howes was killed in action on 8 January 1945, aged 24, and buried in Resteigne (Belgium) temporary burial ground. He was later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 20 May 1947.
