Edward Ernest Smale successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on the 5 September 1945. It was noted that Corporal Smale was "capable and cool. Thinks before he acts"He was posted to 6th Airborne Division Workshops, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

Corporal Smale served in Palestine and was killed on the 28 May 1947 and is now buried in Khayat Beach War Cemetery, Israel.
