Frederick John Bland was the son of Frederick and Rhoda Bland and the husband of Phyllis Bland, of South Chingford, Essex. He was granted a commission and volunteered for airborne forces.

Captain Bland successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 93. The course lasted from 29 November to 13 December 1943 and was posted to 716 (Airborne) Light Composite Company, Royal Army Service Corps, attached to The Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Capt Bland was killed in action on 22 August 1944, aged 24, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
