Prior to centralisation of the Army Air Corps, the Parachute Regt battalions and 7 RHA each had their own Air Troops. These were brought together as a centralised Squadron in 1969, as 664 Aviation Squadron AAC, to provide support to 16 Parachute Brigade. This centralisation improved efficiency, in particular for maintenance and operational tasking.

The squadron was redesignated in 1971 as 664 Parachute Squadron AAC.

Initially based at Jersey Brow hangar at The Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, the unit was equipped with Sioux and Scout helicopters.

When 16 Parachute Bde was disbanded in March 1977, the Squadron lost its Airborne status and reverted to being known as 664 Sqn AAC.

664 Sqn is currently equipped with Apache attack helicopters based at Wattisham as part of 4 Regiment AAC, and is once more part of 16 Air Assault Bde.
