Back to Private Douglas Lowery Photographs

On 8 October 1993, 14 veterans of 1 Border went to Oosterbeek to act as bearers and escorts at the funeral service for Pte Ernest Ager and Pte Douglas Lowery. Their remains had been found earlier in the year where they had fallen in action.

The funeral  was also attended by representatives of the King's Own Royal Border Regiment, the British Military Attache in the Hague, the Dutch Army, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Netherlands Grave Service, the Mayor of Oosterbeek, staff of the Airborne Museum Hartenstein and local people.

The photograph shows Jim Longson carrying the 1 Border Veterans Standard, David Stubbs carrying the Carlisle Branch Standard of the King's Own Royal Border Regimental Association, the local Royal British Legion Standard Bearer and the Rev Geoffrey Allen, preceding Tom Northgraves, Len Scully, Jack Heaton, Ken Briggs, Ron Graydon and Jack Hardwick with Pte Ager's coffin; and Jim McDowell, Wilf Oldham, Ernie Westerman, Bill Homer, Eric Blackwell and Johnnie Peters with Pte Lowery's coffin. At the rear are RSM Bob Flynn and Cpl Conrad Craven (bugler) of the 1st Battalion The King's Own Royal Border Regiment.
