Captain Karpiński is standing in the middle row, 2nd left. Another Polish Parachute Brigade officer is standing at
the right end, back row. Captain Karpiński attended a two week course there in October/November 1943. The
prominent conservatory in the background still exists; it was known as “The Winter Garden”. Smedley’s Hydro
building is now the headquarters of Derbyshire County Council.
