The Arnhem Bridge Memorial (picture on p. 80 of the October issue) was erected in 1945 for the first commemoration of 17th September. At that time there was no material to construct a really good monument in a city of wrecked and damaged buildings: but a member of the Committee hit on the idea of taking a broken column from the front of the Palace of Justice and placing it on a pedestal. The column was hauled by an Army recovery waggon to the ramp of the bridge, where it was inscribed simply with the date in gold letters.

As the stone is cracked in many places, it will last only a few years, but many people think it would be a pity to change it for a more ornamental memorial as they love its very simplicity.
