Winslow Earl Oikle was the son of Winslow L and Amy Oikle, of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. He enlisted in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps on 30 September 1941. He was 5’ 6 “, 136 pounds, Brown Hair, Hazel Eyes, with 20/20 vision.
Corporal Oikle successfully completed parachute training at Fort Benning on 26 December 1942 and joined 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. Sailed to England on 17 July 1943 and jumped with the Battalion into France on 6 June 1944 as part of Operation Overlord (Normandy Landings).
Cpl Oikle was killed in action on 7 June 1944, aged 20, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
