Bill was enlisted as a lad part way through WW2 when of age, and after training was attached to the RUR for their upcoming role in D Day.
He was aboard a glider on the evening of 6th June 1944, landing under fire in a field of cows near to the bridge they were sent to hold after its capture the night before.
They struggled to get the tail off the glider but managed to unload the motorcycle and jeep they were carrying. A Canadian pal beside him was hit by a german bullet and died there beside him, the others diving for cover under the vehicles. This is one of his much recounted memories.
Later he was moved to serve in Palestine, and then while returning to the UK via Austria , spent time in Villach, where his courtship of a local girl led to their marriage in 1948 back in England. Bill never talked much more than this, and never claimed his medals after the war.
