Corporal William Smith was born in Sunderland in 1912. After leaving school he joined the Army with the Highland Light Infantry and served during the interwar years in India.
Corporal Smith joined Airborne Forces with 3rd Parachute Battalion and took part in the North African campaign.
Corporal Smith died on 5 June 1943 from wounds sustained during the North African campaign. He is now buried at El Alia Cemetery, near Algiers, Algeria.
