William Leonard Elvin, son of Leonard and Mabel Elvin, of Lambeth, London, enlisted into The Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Elvin successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to D Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, the Border Regiment.
He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Elvin died on 25 September 1944, aged 20. He is known to have been killed in company positions, west of number 32 Van Borsselenweg. He is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial, for those with no known grave.
