Corporal William Jones was the son of Edward Owen and Martha Jane Jones, of Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, and husband of Ethel May Jones, also of Newton-le-Willows. He served with C Coy, 12th (Yorks) Parachute Battalion after completing Parachute Jump Course 88 at Ringway in October 1943, with the course comments: 'Good parachutist, cheerful and confident, always worked well, make good despatcher'.
He took part in the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944, during Op Overlord and was awarded a posthumous Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his actions in September 1944.
Corporal Jones died on 6 June 1944, aged 23 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
