William Ivan Rutter enlisted into the Royal Artillery during World War II and later volunteered for airborne forces.
He attended Parachute Training Course 109 which ran at RAF Ringway from 27 March to 3 April 1944. The intake comprised of 255 reinforcements to the Airborne Divisions, a party of 19 Forward Observers from the Royal Artillery and 44 men of the 1st Air Landing Reconnaissance Squadron.
Bill did well on this course and the course instructors notes record that he was a "good performer, fast in sticks and confident." On qualifying as a military parachutist he was posted to the 13th Parachute Battalion.
He fought with the battalion in the Normandy campaign after parachuting into France during the early hours of 6 June 1944.
