William Henry Bowdidge was the son of William Henry and Beatrice Mary (Bright) Bowdidge, of Exeter, Devon; husband of Gwendoline I (Courtier) Bowdidge, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Bowdidge successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Bowdidge was killed in action on 2 April 1945, aged 35, and was given a field burial at Lengerich and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 28 April 1947.
