William Greendale, son of Thomas and Violet Greendale and husband of Alice Greendale, of Hull, enlisted into The Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Greendale successfully completed parachute training on course 86 at RAF Ringway from 4 to 19 October 1943. His course report stated ‘Good worker and performer’. He was posted to 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.
He jumped into Normandy on D Day and later took part in the 6th Airborne Division response to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, during Winter 1944-5.
Sgt Greendale was killed in action on 3 January 1945, aged 33, and was buried in Bure, Tellin, (Belgium) temporary burial ground. He was later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 20 May 1947.
