William Frederick Gray, son of Mrs G Fox, of Hull and husband of Muriel Gray, of Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, enlisted into The Green Howards and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gray successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Gray was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 21. He was buried in the Onder de Bomen General Cemetery at Renkum and was re-interred in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
