William Edwin Andrews was the son of William Henry Cranch and Millicent Andrews, of Plymouth. He enlisted in The Devonshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Andrews successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Andrews was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 32, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 22 April 1947.
