William Charles Cheesmond, son of William and Lucy Cheesmond, of Dunscroft, Yorkshire, enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Cheesmond successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course 90 from 1 to 13 November 1943 and was posted to The 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion. He saw active service in Normandy, The Ardennes and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Cheesmond was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 20. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
