William Beck was the son of William and Lucy Beck, of St Helens, Lancashire. He originally enlisted in The King's Regiment (Liverpool) and then volunteered for airborne forces.
He was posted into D Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne) Border Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden.
Pte Beck was killed in action on 24 September 1944, aged 21. He was probably killed near the Oorsprong estate on Van Borsselenweg, but has no known grave. Pte Beck is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
