Wilfred Shane, son of Thomas and Mary Shane, of Carlisle, enlisted into the General Service Corps.
He volunteered for airborne forces in February 1945 and qualified as a military parachutist after attending Course 156/157 which ran at RAF Ringway from 12 March to 4 April 1945. The course report states: ‘Pte Shane: Good performer, cheerful and confident.’
Private Shane subsequently served in The 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion as part of the Mortar Platoon in Headquarters Company.
He died on 26 December 1945, aged 19 years old and is buried at the Jakarta War Cemetery, Java.
