WO1 RSM Wayne Sykes joined the army on the 29 March 1998 and subsequently passed out of depot Para (Catterick) 17 December 1998. He was posted to 2 PARA B Coy who were already deployed to NI. After 3 years in B Coy he moved over to the Signals Pl.
In 2001 he deployed to Macedonia as part of the NATO Operation Essential Harvest.
In 2002 he deployed to Bessbrook Mill in NI for what was a 6 month tour but this was extended to almost 8 months, this was followed in 2002 by Operation Fingal, in Afghanistan.
In 2005 he was posted to ITC Catterick and PARA Coy to train the future of the regiment. In 2007 he returned back to 2 PARA for a short stint with C Coy. With the PSBC under his belt he was promoted to Sgt and took over as 4 Pl Sgt B Coy, this post saw him deploy on Herrick 8 and was based in FOB Inkerman..
In 2009 he was posted back to ITC Catterick but this time as a member of P Coy staff. He remained in the role for 1 year as he was selected to be a CSgt instructor at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2010.
In 2012 he was posted back to 2 PARA and took over as D CQMS. On promotion to WO2 in 2014 he established and started from scratch A Coy (alongside the OC Maj W Hunt) giving the Battalion its much needed 3rd rifle Coy.
In 2016 WO2 Sykes was posted back to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for a post of a CSM. This position lasted 1 year as he was selected for an RQMS post in 3 PARA.
In 2019 he was selected and promoted to WO1 and was selected to return back to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to take up the position of Old College RSM. This post was extended and he finished his service in this post having served for 24 years.
