Walter William Stevens joined the Army Reserve on 30th May 1938. Later that year he joined the Middlesex Regiment (Regular Army) at Mill Hill.
After serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France, Private Stevens volunteered for airborne forces in 1941. He took part in parachute training course 3 at RAF Ringway. The course lasted from 5 December 1941 - 13 December 1941. Upon successful completion Pte Stevens was posted to 2nd Parachute Battalion, The Parachute Regiment.
Following this Pte Stevens saw action in North Africa (Op Torch), Sicily (Op Husky) and Arnhem (Operation Market-Garden).
During the Battle of Arnhem, Pte Stevens was fighting at Arnhem Bridge as part of MMG Platoon, Support Company. He was taken prisoner at the Bridge on the 25th September 1944.
He spent the remainder of the Second World War in Stalag IVB and Stalag IVF respectively. Pte Stevenes was released by allied forces on 28 May 1945 and returned home.
Pte Stevens was discharged shortly after.
