Walter Dixon Fletcher was born in Dumfriesshire and lived in Nothumberland, he enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Fletcher successfully completed Glider training and was posted to 1 (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment. He took part in the Battle of Arnhem, Operation Market Garden.
Cpl Fletcher was killed in action on 24 September 1944, and was buried in Utrecht (Soestbergen) General Cemetery.
