Thomas R Barron CBE

Thomas Robert barron was the son of Robert Barron and Florence may Brown. He was born in Gateshead district, Co. Durham/Tyne and Wear. He was educated at Dame Allan's school, Newcastle on Tyne, King's College, Durham University (BA 1st Class Hons (Econ.)).

He became a 2Lt 13 March 1943 and was posted to Number 1 Bty, 1st Air Landing Light Regiment, RA on 20 March 1943. In September 1944 he became a Gun Position Officer, a troop, 1st Airlanding Light Bty RA. He was wounded in Arnhem, but was successfully evacuated. 

In July 1969 he became a Major with Engineer and railway Staff Corps, Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve (TAVR). Thomas retired as a Lt Col. 30 April 1982. He was awarded a CBE on 14 June 1980. 

In civilian life Thomas joined the LNER as a Traffic Apprentice in 1946; Assistant General Manager, London Midland Region, 1966, Western Region, 1967; British Railways Board; Director Management Staff, 1970; Controller of Corporate Planning, 1972; Director of Planning and Investment,1977. Executive Director, Channel Tunnel, 1981 - 82. Member, NW Economic Planning Council, 1965 - 67. Member, british railways Board, 1978 - 81.
