Thomas Muir Miller was the son of Robert and Mary Campbell Miller, of Glasgow.
He volunteered for airborne forces while serving with The London Scottish Regiment and qualified as a military parachutist on course 13, which ran at RAF Ringway in May 1942.
Tom Miller subsequently served in the Mortar Platoon, 1st Parachute Battalion and deployed for Operation Torch later that year, arriving in North Africa in November.
In early February the 1st Para Bn were ordered to take Djebel Mansour and Dejbel Alliliga, the commanding heights on the Pont du Fahs/Tunis Road, which were occupied by German troops. Although they took Djebel Mansour, they were forced to withdraw when they ran out of ammunition and suffered 50% casualties, including L/Cpl Miller who was killed in the intense fighting.
L/Cpl Miller died on 5 February 1943, aged 23 years, and is now commemorated on the Medjez El Bab Memorial, Tunisia.
