Thomas John MacDonald was the son of James and Margaret MacDonald, of Inverness. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private MacDonald successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 26 from 7 to 12 September 1942 and was posted to 16 Parachute Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte MacDonald was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial 30 yards into a wood to the west of the burned Schoonoord Hotel, Oosterbeek and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 January 1946.
