Thomas Charles Herbert Dennis the son of Mr and Mrs G T Dennis, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment, transferred to 10th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers. He later volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Dennis undertook parachute training on No 40 Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 1 to 11 December 1942 and was then posted to 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion.
He later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Pte Dennis.
Pte Dennis died at sea on 10 September 1943. His body was recovered and buried in Taranto Military Cemetery. He was later identified and re-interred in Bari British Military Cemetery on 6 October 1944.
