Sydney J Marshall was born on 11 November 1919 and later worked as a miner. He enlisted with the Coldstream Guards in May 1939, and saw service in France as a Guardsman before returning to the UK from Dunkirk.
Sydney then volunteered for airborne forces and completed Parachute Course No 3 at RAF Ringway between 5 and 12 December 1941. He was then posted to the 3rd Parachute Battalion, serving as a Private within 9 Section, 9 Platoon, C Company.
Sydney undertook operations in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and finally Arnhem. At Arnhem, he was initially listed as missing, but notification was received in October 1944 that he had been taken prisoner and was in a PoW Camp. He was repatriated in May 1945.
In 1946 Sydney transferred back to the Coldstream Guards, prior to being demobbed.
